Peer reviews and feedback

During week 9 we were to post the link to our wordpress blogs that we had been working on for many weeks. After uploading my URL I received my 2 peer reviews. I found both of these reviews to be extremely helpful. Especially considering my proof reading is not very good and is a skill in which I need to improve upon which was picked up on in my peer reviews. Both of my peer reviews suggested ways of improving my blog and I definitely took onboard the feedback and used that to improve my blog. Feedback was given on areas that needed a little more work and I tried to work with all of the comments that were given to improve my writing style and make my blog more academic yet still keep my own opinion within the blog as it is still a reflection of my learning. Having had my blog reviewed by peers before submission has been a great experience and I have found it useful seeing other students blogs to inspire me in further ways that my own personal blog could be improved upon. Week 8 refection on lifelong learning

“Lifelong learning may be broadly defined as learning that is pursued throughout life (llcq, 2013)”. My own understanding of what lifelong learning is to keep learning for the whole period of time which you are alive. This does not have to be learning a new degree or obtaining a phd. I feel like I am learning constantly, everyday. If there is information someone may need, out comes a mobile phone and look something up on google and learn from reading the information i find. Just yesterday I wanted to start knitting therefore I opened youtube and watched a few videos and learnt through doing that. This is where being digitally fluent and knowing where and how to access digital information is vital to lifelong learning. Having been born in the digital age i feel as though i should be able to carry on with learning throughout the rest of my life without to much trouble as technology and i grew up as basically, brother and sister.Lifelong learning is important in all aspects of life.  Learning keeps the mind active and alive. Learning leads to career progression. In my opinion there is no downside in learning new information. I love the fact that I do not know everything and that every day I get to learn something new.

Week 7 – Digital Blurring

The first task of the week that I wanted to accomplish was to make an arcade game on sploder which was part of the learning activities that had been set for the week. Saying I was nervous was an understatement. After my somewhat dismal attempts at last weeks animation my anxiety was rapidly increasing and was pressure was mounting. However after watching the tutorials and looking through some of the games my peers had made I felt comfortable making the game and really enjoyed the experience. One might ask what skills do we learn from online gaming and the likes? Most people think that gaming is mind numbing and uneducational, when infact you can develop hand eye coordination as well as motor skills. Games for fine motor skill development can be found all throughout the internet. This week also had us looking at digital blurring and asking questions such as, what is digital blurring? My understanding of digital blurring is the digital world and our personal world crossing paths.  Lastly we were asked how do these skills transfer into other areas of our life? Skills that are learnt through digital devices or  online can then be carried over and used as we study or begin our careers as teachers.

Week 6 – Digital Fluency

The week was all about digital fluency. Starting off with making an animation at http://scratch.mit.edu. The task was daunting and especially for those who aren’t familiar with computers and animations. Truthfully i felt out of my depth. What exactly is digital fluency? “An evolving aptitude that empowers the individual to effectively and ethically interpret information, discover meaning, design content, construct knowledge, and communicate ideas in a digitally connected world (Definition of digital fluency, 2014).” My understanding of digital fluency is being comfortable using and manoeuvring through digital technologies and being able to constantly improve digital skills. Teaching children to be digitally fluent begins at a very young age and working on their fluency will continue for a lifetime. A nice easy way to understand digital fluency can be seen on this short video.

Week 5 – Digital Information

Digital information comes in many different forms.

blogs
images
online video clips
journals
social media
online newspaper articles
websites
encyclopaedias

That is just to give an example of a few ways digital information can be accessed. Knowing what information is truthful is another story. Students need to be able to critically evaluate sources to determine the credibility. Things that should be taken into consideration are, who is the Author? What are the Authors qualifications? How recently was it published? Is the information up to date and current? Has it come from an educational website or government website? Does the information come from a place that could be bias? Evaluating digital information for credibility is a lengthy process and making sure that you have gained credible information will strengthen your academic writing. I find myself being a far more critical user now than ever before and that will be an important skill to teach my future students.

Week 4 – The Digital Divide

The digital divide comes to my mind immediately as something that would exist in 3rd world countries. However the digital divide is in fact right here throughout Australia and not as uncommon as one would think. “The new report released on Tuesday shows 97 per cent of those earning $120,000 or more are internet users, compared with 77 per cent of those earning less than $40,000 a year (Sharma, M, 2014)”. These statistics indicate that internet usage is far more prevalent in higher earning families. Those with lower incomes are going to be affected most by the digital divide.

After reading the texts and watching the clip for the week i was then left with several questions in regards to the digital divide. Will bridging the gap also bring together those in different socio economic groups? Will this effect other social issues? lastly will it improve the education system and boost academic results and better our students literacy skills?
